December meeting - Notice of Cancellation

We have heard today that our demonstrator for Wednesday, Paul Howard, has had a near family member test positive  for Covid and Paul has reluctantly had to cancel his demo as he would not risk our club members at this difficult time.

It would be very difficult to find another demonstrator and so the Chairman after consulting with other committee members has decided to cancel the meeting. It is a great disappointment just as we have got going again but we live in unusual times.

The club competition will be held over until a future meeting, which will hopefully be our AGM in January but you will be advised in plenty of time.

Ted asked for membership forms and money to be sent or handed in before or at the December meeting but can we ask all of you who have not yet renewed your AWGB membership to now do so by post or by BACS (don’t forget to send Ted the separate Chelmer Valley Membership club form by email).

If any of you have toys for the children in Phoenix ward at Broomfield Hospital please let Ted know by email or a phone call so we can arrange for them to be collected and taken to Broomfield.

Words from the Chair

December already, toys for children in hospital over Christmas were due to be handed in, but yet there is still time. We appreciate that some members aren’t turning as much, but can I appeal to you again to make a small toy which will bring a smile to a child at Christmas. It needs to be small and have a food safe finish. Spinning tops are popular, those accompanied by a concave "saucer" to spin on are more so. Please give it a thought.

Ted will delay the handover until 20th December.

Attendance was up this month and we all enjoyed Darren Breeze's demonstration of the Rising Sun Platter. (see summary below).

December is usually competition month, but this will be delayed until we next meet, so you still have time! Kindly make sure that any identification is concealed on entries and remember there are three categories.

  •  The Chairman’s Cup - Decorated turning

  • The Secretary’s Plate - Plain turning

  • The Chelmer Trophy - Segmented turning

Current conditions dictate that seating is spaced and masks must be worn unless exempt and gentlemen please stay out of the ladies toilets.

Until we next see each other, happy toy making, stay well, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

November’s event was delivered by the ever wonderful Darren Breeze who showed a fantastic display of turning skills as well as an interesting way to decorate with his Rising Sun Bowl.
